History:
GLYHop Restaurant, Located at 149 Glen Street. This Restaurant is located in a landmark building which was built in 1810 by Mr. Coles and therefor also known as the The Coles Homestead. This building is also used as an attractive film location and for commercial productions
The Coles Homestead
The J. Coles Homestead, at the corner of Butler and Glen Street dates from about 1810. Though a small section could date from as early as 1690. Little is known about the first inhabitant, except that he was a sea captain and a descendant of one of three Coles brothers who were the original settlers of Musketo Cove Plantation. The House was located at the front of his large family farm property fronting on the upper mill pond. There have been three, possible four additions to the saltbox style house and themain section was remodeled to Greek Revival style about 1815. The building is constucted of stone, brick,shingle and clapboard, had four, possible five fireplaces. In 1873 the house was occuplied by J.H. Coles, whose wife served on the Bi-Centenial refreshment committee. Later it belong to Loren Tites Coles, a Quaker, who assisted in a courageous rescue during the blizzard of 1888. It passed to his brother Franklin Coles. Today it serves as GLYHop Restaurant. The Coles Homestead is totally restored. The Holden Family are the current owners.
